Turkey – Marmara Denizi (Sea of Marmara)

The Sea of Marmara (Marmara Denizi in Turkish) is the body of water that divides Europe from Asia Minor. The water flow is from the Black Sea (Karadeniz) to the Mediterranean (Akdeniz). The body of water between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea is the Bosphorus. The body of water between the Sea of Marmara and the Mediterranean is the Dardanelles. All three waters are covered on this page, listed from NE to SW.

Bosphorus Moorages

Poyrazköy harbour

Description: Located on the eastern bank of the Bosphorus immediately before the Black Sea. It is a conveniently located harbour for starting or ending a passage on the Bosphorus or across the Black Sea.
Problems or Issues: In September/October there was a fishing boat leaving the harbour every 15 minutes for most of the day and night. The large boats dock on the quay while up to 20 of the small 2 man boats anchor during the night time hours.
Bebek anchorage

Description: A small anchorage on western shore of Bosphorus, possibility to anchor or a mooring buoy may be available.
Problems or Issues: Swell from passing cargo vessels.

Sea of Marmara Moorages

Atakoy Marina

Description: A modern marina with all facilities, close to the bus routes to central Istanbul (the railway is suspeneded until 2016 due to rebuilding). One of 2 designated marinas for registration for purchasing a Transit Log .

Description: A modern marina located in a town of 100,000 with ferries to both the European (Yenikapi) and Asian (Pendik) sides of Istanbul (where the 2 airports are located for those boats needing crew changes).
Yalova also acts as a gateway to Bursa which is the ancient capital of Turkey: busses from outside the marina take you to Bursa in 45 minutes, from the Bursa bus station (which is on the outskirts of town) city bus number 38 has a circular route through the historic city.
Problems or Issues: Most of the chandleries are located elsewhere with only a small one in Yalova.

Chandlery Options for Yalova

The Yalova Marina was built by the city of Yalova soon after the millennium, after managing it themselves for some years they signed a multi-year lease for management services with Setur Marinas. Yalova is a city with a population of approximately 100,000 although more of these people are present in the summer. During the winter the town is very quiet with the surrounding area having light industry as well as mixed and greenhouse farming. Most notably it does not have a large harbour or fishing fleet. As a consequence there is not much in the way of services for yachts in Yalova itself. There are usually one or two small operations in the marina which will look after boats for the winter and undertake small repairs. Also as of 2014 there is a marine mechanic based there.

In the town of Yalova, about 2 streets inland from the marina is Ovo Marine which offers a combination of light chandlery and fishing supplies. Supposedly they can order anything from Istanbul distributors but the man working there has never seemed too interested in such activity. Turkish boat owners also report him as “uncooperative”.

There are two ferries out of Yalova, one to Europe and one to Asia. The Europe ferry goes to Yenikapi and a short bus ride (the BN1 bus) will take you to Ataköy Marina where there are some chandlery outlets and a few companies in the boatyard.

The main destination from Yalova, if looking for chandlery has to be the Asian side via Pendik. Pendik has a large marina (larger than Yalova) and until December 2013 there was a well stocked chandlery in the marina. For a description of the chandlery options for Asian Istanbul, click here.

Accessing Istanbul from Yalova

The Ido ferry to Yenikapi will take you to close to the Blue Mosque on the European side of Istanbul. To go further west or east along the waterfront highway take bus BN1 or BN2. The Aksaray metro station is about a 15 minute walk from the Yenikapi ferry terminal. Atatürk Airport is to the west for international flights – reachable by bus or metro.

The Ido ferry to Pendik will take you to the Istanbul burough of Pendik. From here you can proceed to Kadiköy by bus or dolmuş. Both stop across the major roadway outside of the Ido terminal. The dolmuş takes about 1 hour to get you to Kadiköy and is more or less an express service. The bus takes much longer. From Kadiköy there is the Metro, the Marmarail (metro train service under the Bosphorus), a major city bus station fro the Asian side as well as the ferries to various points on the European side of the Bosphorus. If returning to Pendik from Keriköy, there is a slight catch to using the dolmuş: two dolmuşes mus be taken, the first running from Keriköy to Bostançi, then a second from Bostançi to Pendik. The price is approximately the same in either direction.

By approximately 2017 the metro extension will have a stop in Pendik – the end station in 2015 is in Kartal. Presumably there will be changes to the bus lines to reflect the new service. Commuting time between Pendik and Keriköy/Kadiköy will be greatly shortened.

In Pendik, after exiting the Ido ferry terminal, cross the road and you will find the dolmuş station, if you continue walking towards the buildings across the green space you will reach some pedestrian streets running away from the water. About 20 minutes walking will take you to the Pendik train station. At present the trains only go east to Ankara but the rail is being rebuilt to Hyderpaşa which is next to Kadiköy.

Avşa Adasi harbour

Description: A large unused harbour west of the north tip of Avsa island with excellent shelter. Some local boats moored but otherwise empty. Locals said it was a secondary harbour for the island ferry when weather closed the primary dock. Dolmuş from road above harbour 3 times a day, alternately walk to Avşa town in 30 to 45 minutes. The usual Turkish food chains are there, also cooking gas.

Description: An ancient harbour for the local marble quarry. Open air museum is along a road running up the valley behind the village. The usual Turkish food chains are there, also cooking gas.

Description: A newly built, unused harbour, small village with some foodstuffs about 20 minutes walk to north. Some local boats and in 2015, equipment from the harbour construction.

Description: A slightly chaotic harbour, mainly full with no marked visitor spaces. Tidy little town with shaded streets and most food services. Bus station for Bandirma where there is a ferry to Istanbul.

Description: A city run marina with full facilities. Port of entry with all necessary services, boats checking in/out there described it as easily done. All services in town. Multiple options for touring both Troy and Galipoli. Dolmuş to Troy runs from dolmuş terminal beside highway bridge over river on west side of town, hourly service. Sardalye restaurant (www.sardalye.com.tr) is not to be missed for fish lovers. Stand up eating in street with a few stools. Diesel and free laundry in marina. Marina staff very friendly and helpful.
